Is Salta worth visiting?

By Pablo Pérez Sancho, tour guide in Salta · Updated October 2026

Yes, if you want a side of Argentina most visitors miss. Salta and Jujuy have the coloured mountains of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the white Salinas Grandes, Andean villages and some of vineyards above 1,600 m around Cafayate. It fits well with Buenos Aires and Iguazú, and its best season, April to November, is the opposite of Patagonia's.

What makes Salta different?

The Northwest is the most Andean part of Argentina. You see it in the villages, the adobe churches, the markets and the food: empanadas, humitas and locro. The landscape changes every hour of driving, from green valleys to red canyons and salt flats at 3,450 m.

Salta or Mendoza for wine?

Mendoza is Argentina's main wine region and the place for big wineries. Cafayate is smaller and higher, with family wineries, Torrontés, the local white grape, and red wines from vineyards more than 1,600 m above sea level. In Salta you get wine and mountain scenery on the same trip.

Salta or Patagonia?

If you can, do both: their best seasons fit together. Patagonia is at its best in the southern summer, while Salta is dry and sunny from April to November. In the middle of the year, when days in Patagonia are short and cold, the Northwest is in its best season.

How many days do I need?

Four to six days. That is enough for the Quebrada de Humahuaca, El Hornocal, the Salinas Grandes, Cachi and Cafayate without rushing, and it lets you sleep in the valleys to adjust to the altitude. See our 5-day itinerary.
