Best time to visit Salta & Jujuy

Salta and Jujuy can be visited all year. April to November is the dry season, with clear skies and cold nights in the highlands. December to March is the rainy season: green valleys and afternoon storms, and more than 80% of the year's rain in Salta falls in these four months, so floods can cut mountain roads.

What is the dry season like?

From April to November rain is rare: Salta city gets under 10 mm a month from May to August. Days are sunny, and in July Salta averages 20 °C by day and 3 °C at night. It is the easiest time for the high roads to the Salinas Grandes, El Hornocal and the Abra del Acay.

What happens in the rainy season?

Salta city gets almost 200 mm of rain in January. Storms build in the afternoon and the hills turn green. Floods can close roads: in January 2025 rain cut the road to El Hornocal, and landslides can block Route 40 over the Abra del Acay. Leave spare time in your plan.

How cold is winter on the Puna?

Very cold at night. At La Quiaca, on the Puna at 3,442 m, the average July low is −6.2 °C, while days reach about 16 °C. Snow can make the Abra del Acay pass hard to cross. Bring a warm jacket, a hat and gloves for the salt flats and viewpoints.

What is the best time for each area?

For the Quebrada de Humahuaca, El Hornocal and the Salinas Grandes, April to November, when the high roads are dry. The Calchaquí Valleys and Cafayate are dry most of the year, but Route 40 between Cachi and Cafayate has gravel and dirt stretches that can become impassable after heavy rain.
