Why do short distances take so long?

Some of the classic roads are gravel and climb in switchbacks. Cachi to Cafayate on Route 40 is only 156 km but takes about 4 hours, and the 23 km of gravel from Humahuaca to the El Hornocal viewpoint take about 45 minutes.

Is there a shorter road to Jujuy?

Yes. The old RN 9 through La Cornisa cuts Salta to Purmamarca to 157 km, but it is a narrow, winding road through the cloud forest and takes about 3 h 10 min, a little longer than the faster route.

How many days do I need for the full loop?

Salta, the Quebrada de Humahuaca with El Hornocal, the Salinas Grandes, Cachi and Cafayate add up to about 1,000 km. In four days the longest stretch is Tilcara to Cachi over the salt flats and Route 40, about 8 hours at the wheel. With more days you drive less and stop more.
